Bog Baby
Who/What is Bog Baby? Where can I find the story? Is Bog Baby real? Where does Bog Baby live?
The Bog Baby is a truly magical story by Jeanne Willis and Gwen Millward.
When two small sisters go fishing to the magic pond, they find something much better than a frog or a newt. They find a Bog Baby. Small and blue with wings like a dragon, the girls decide to make him their secret. I won't tell if you won't...
But the Bog Baby is a wild thing, and when he becomes poorly the girls decide they must tell their mum. She tells them the greatest lesson: if you really love something, you have to let it go.
Acting out the story
The grown-ups acted out the story. Each member of staff took on the role of a character. Mrs Howard and Miss Oakley played the girls, Mrs Warren played the Bog Baby, Mrs Ratings played the mum and Mrs Hindmarsh narrated the story. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the performance and some have been using the role play area to act out their own version of the story.
Continuous Provision activities
We have been busy getting to know the different Year One classrooms. In Mrs Howard's class, children have been making a home for Bog Baby using the lego, painting Bog Baby in the creative area and making a home for Bog Baby in the sand and water. In Miss Oakley's class, children have been using the writing table to write notes to Bog Baby, making a home for Bog Baby using the construction equipment and using figures to act out the story. Mrs Warren and Mrs Hindmarsh have also been busy supporting children in our Year One intervention room. Children have been shown how to access the different areas and how to use and look after the resources.
Look what we've been doing...
We're going on a Bog Baby hunt....We're not scared!...
Friday 29th September 2017
Today we went on a Bog Baby hunt to Mr Povey's garden. We had a magical time! We came out of school to find a glitter trail. We followed the flitter and it led us to 'Bluebell Woods'. We found some clues and they eventually led us to a egg hiding in a tree. We couldn't believe it when we opened the egg to find a little Bog Baby hiding inside.
Our salt dough Bog Baby models...
As part of our topic lessons we have been designing our very own Bog Babies. We decided to make some little Bog Babies out of salt dough. Each child completed a plan, choosing a selection of resources that they would like to use to decorate their Bog Baby. Then each child made their Bog Baby out of salt dough. After that we decorated our Bog Babies. Finally we competed a evaluation sheet. We thought about what worked well and how we could improve our models next time. Have a look at the photographs below and see if you can spot your model...
