How does my child learn Phonics at school?

Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI) is a whole-school approach to teaching literacy for children aged 4 to 9 that creates fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

It is delivered through interactive lessons full of partner work, role-play and drama, to integrate phonics with comprehension, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and handwriting.

As a school, we have an online subscription which provides planning and assessment support for both teachers and parents. All teachers and teaching assistants at Linaker have received full training in delivering Read, Write, Inc. We also have a consultant, Sara, who visits us every term to support us in our delivery of RWI across the school.

Your child learns and practises three sets of sounds (letter-sound correspondences) in school, daily. In their Phonics lessons they learn new sounds and in class we practise the ones they already know.

If your child is struggling to learn Phonics or remember what they have learnt, they will also be receiving 1:1 'tutoring' each day, where they will have a quick five minute session with a teaching assistant to help them to learn the sounds they don't yet know.
