Phonics Screening - Autumn 2021
The 'phonics screening check' is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England, and is usually taken in June.
It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It helps to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.
Usually, by Year 2, most pupils will have reached a point in their reading progress where they have passed the screening and are moving on to developing their reading fluency and comprehension (which is assessed formally by the SATs in the Summer term).
However, due to the Covid-19 disruptions to the 2020-21 school year, this year's Year 2 children did not do the phonics screening check in Year 1, so all Year 2 pupils will take this assessment in the second half of the Autumn term 2021.
Any pupils who do not achieve the pass mark in the Autumn, will re-take the phonics screening check in June 2022.
