Spring 2 - Paws, Claws and Whiskers
Year 1 Knowledge Organiser - Spring Term: Paws, Claws & Whiskers
We are reading... The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson
Our whole topic this term is centered around the theme of 'Animals'. Our class text for English is Julia Donaldson's "The Gruffalo", which we have LOVED reading! We are also making our way through a selection of other Julia Donaldson books, comparing them and discussing our favourites as we go. Did you know that Axel Sheffler has illustrated most of her books?
Developing a love of reading: World Book Day

We dressed as animals from our favourite stories, in honour of Sir David Attenborough
Science Week: Investigating Quicksand!

In learning about where we live, we learnt that there is quicksand on the coast between Southport and Blackpool, so we watched a video about what it is and how to get free if you ever get stuck in it. Then we investigated how much different animals would sink into quicksand and how easily they could be freed. We learnt about size, weight, surface area and the structure of different animals. We also made predictions and observed scientific phenomena. Watch a snippet of our lesson here! Which animal do you think got the most stuck; the human, the cat, the dog, the pig, the tortoise or the walrus?
Spanish Visitor: Nuria from our buddy-school in Spain came to visit and helped us to learn about animals

Writing for a purpose: Here we are posting letters home after learning our address and writing about our school day
Cross-Curricular Maths: We learnt about Shrove Tuesday then took a vote of our favourite pancake toppings, keeping a tally to see which flavour won and making a pictogram to show the result. Then we added numbers to 20, using our 'Pancake I Spy' sheet.
