Useful tips for sharing stories and hearing your child read;
- Remember that you are trying to give confidence to your child and to develop a love of books and reading.
- Make sure that you are sitting comfortably, tv/music off and try to avoid other distractions.
- Start by talking about the book ie title, author, illustrator, what is on the front cover, what do they think the story will be about?
- As you read the story, discuss the pictures with your child and allow time for them to look at and talk about the pictures.
- At a suitable point in the story, ask the child “What do you think is going to happen next?
- When the story is finished, ask your child to tell you what the story was about and to talk about the parts that s/he enjoyed the most.
- Finish with praise.
- Remember that it should be an enjoyable time for you and your child to share a book and that the best reading role model for your child is you!
